A real life problem in Whale Talk is bullying in high school. In the book, a top - level football player named Mike Barbour beat up a special - needs kid named Chris Coughlin by smashing his head repeatedly in front of his own locker. Mike beat up Chris because he thought Chris was disgracing the football team by wearing their jacket. He thought that special - needs kids like Chris shouldn't wear a football jacket because they were "weird" so they didn't have the right to wear it. The main character T.J. saw Chris getting beat up so he saved Chris from Mike and told Mike to go away and mind his own business. T.J. encouraged Chris to keep on wearing the jacket proudly and not to fear anyone.
By giving this example, the author shows that bystanders should stand up to bullies and protect the victims so that the bullies will stop bullying and go away.
I think bullying is a horrendous act and should be stopped immediately. Bullying disrupts the victim's life and the academic environment in the school. Bullying can be stopped by placing strict rules and hallway monitors in the hallways. Another way bullying can be curbed is by training bystanders to stand up to bullies and to protect the victims. People should just concentrate on academics and extracurricular activities, not bullying other people.
