T.J. is the protagonist of Whale Talk. He is a round and dynamic character. The readers get to know a lot about him while they read the book and he changes throughout the book. At the beginning of the book, he was a slacker and did not care about his school. He thought school sports were stupid so he did not participate in any school sport, even though he was very athletic. At the end of the book, he won a varsity letter by swimming really well for the Cutter High School swim team. He also thought that school sports are fun by the end of the book because he was the captain of the swim team. At the beginning of the book, T.J. didn't care about many people and didn't have many friends. Towards the end of the book, T.J. cares about people and has a lot of friends because he developed social skills by being the swim team captain. T.J.'s character change helped advance the plot because he led the swim team very well and led them to win the tournament because now he cared about his school. The cause of T.J.'s character change is Mr. Simet because he encouraged T.J. to start a swim team because he was very good at swimming.
